Gift Ideas for Grandparents Who Say They Don't Need Anything
Thoughtful gifts for grandparents who insist they need nothing: photo and keepsake ideas that bring the grandchildren closer, picks for grandma and grandpa, and Christmas gifts that actually get used.

Every family has one, and usually two: the grandparent who answers "What would you like?" with "Oh, nothing, I have everything I need." They mean it. After decades of birthdays they own enough mugs, scarves and candles to open a shop. What they do not have enough of is the grandchildren, and that is the clue to every good gift on this list.
This guide is built around that idea. The best gifts for grandparents are made of the family rather than bought for the household, and most of them cost less than the gadget you were about to order out of desperation. We have split them into gifts that bring the grandchildren closer, picks for grandma and for grandpa, gifts for the two of them together, and Christmas gifts for grandparents that will still be in use in March.
Why "I Don't Need Anything" Is a Clue
Take the sentence at face value and you will buy the wrong thing. Take it as information and it tells you three things.
- They are not short of objects. Anything generic adds to a cupboard they are already trying to empty. Personalization is not a nice extra here; it is the only reason a new thing earns its place.
- They are short of contact. AARP's 2018 grandparenting study found more than half of grandparents have at least one grandchild living over 200 miles away, and named distance the biggest barrier to seeing them. A gift that closes that gap, even by a few photos, lands harder than anything from a catalog.
- They want to be known. Grandma the person has interests that have nothing to do with being Grandma. A gift that remembers them is the one she tells her friends about.
Everything below follows from that. If you want a fast route through it, our Gift Finder will point you at the right guide in three taps.
Gifts That Bring the Grandchildren Closer

These are the gifts that make them cry a bit. Lead with one of these and the rest is optional.
The Photo Book They Did Not Have to Make
Grandparents have thousands of photos on their phones and none on paper. A printed photo book from the last year, with captions in the kids' words, is the gift most often described as "the best thing anyone has ever given me". Keep it to one year, one child per spread, and let the children write the captions. Our guide to personalized photo gifts worth giving covers which photos print well and which to leave on the phone.
- Best for: Any grandparent, especially the long-distance ones.
- Personalization: Photos, captions, a dedication page.
- Lead time: Printed to order; allow two weeks, more in December.
A Framed Drawing, Properly Framed
Take the drawing on the fridge, scan it, print it on good paper and frame it like art. Add the child's name and age in small type underneath. It costs little and it goes on the wall for years, which is more than the gadget would have managed.
The Recordable Story
A recordable storybook, or a short audio recording of a grandchild reading, singing or just talking, loaded onto a small speaker or a QR code on a card. For a grandparent who cannot easily travel, hearing the voice on demand matters more than any photo.
The Family Calendar, Already Filled In
A wall calendar with a family photo per month and every birthday, anniversary and school holiday pre-printed on the dates. It solves the "when is Oliver's birthday again?" problem for a year and puts a different grandchild on the kitchen wall every month.
Gifts for Grandma

Not the Grandma from the greetings-card aisle; the actual woman.
- An apron or tea towel with the grandchildren's handwriting. Scan a "we love you Grandma" from each child and have it embroidered or printed. Used daily, washed weekly, and still legible after a year.
- A garden marker or plant pot engraved with a name. For the grandmother who gardens, a slate or steel marker reading "Grandma's roses" is the kind of small thing she will point out to visitors.
- A photo locket or bracelet. One small photo of the grandchildren in something she can wear. Keep it to one image; our Mother's Day guide has more on jewellery that gets worn rather than stored.
- A recipe book of her own recipes. Collect the family dishes, type them up with photos of the finished plates, and print a short cookbook with her name on the cover. This one is a gift to the whole family disguised as a gift to her.
Gifts for Grandpa
The man who wants nothing usually wants to be useful or to be left in peace with a hobby. Give him one of those.
- A personalized tool, mug or flask for the hobby. Engraved with his name or a line the grandkids say. The hobby is the key: fishing, woodwork, crosswords, football on the radio. Our Father's Day guide is written for exactly this man, a generation on.
- A "Grandpa's workshop" or "Grandpa's garage" sign. Metal or wood, with the year he became a grandfather. Corny, and loved.
- A photo puzzle of the grandchildren. Something to do on a quiet afternoon that ends with their faces on the table.
- A playlist or audiobook subscription loaded by the grandchildren. Not personalized in print, but personal in the way that counts: the kids chose it.
Personalized Gifts for Grandparents Together

One gift for the pair, celebrating them as the root of the family.
The Family Tree Print
Their names at the base, children and grandchildren branching up, in a clean typographic style rather than a literal tree. Leave room for additions. Of all the personalized gifts for grandparents, this is the one that gets hung in the hallway.
The Names Blanket
A soft throw with every grandchild's name woven or printed in a simple list. It lives on the sofa, which is where the grandchildren sit when they visit, which is the point. Quality matters: pick a heavier knit over a thin fleece.
The "Est." Doormat or Sign
"The Patels, est. 1979" on a doormat, a slate sign or a wooden board. It marks the house as theirs, and it photographs well for the family group chat.
Matching Mugs That Are Not Twee
"Grandma" and "Grandpa" in a typeface you would choose for yourself, or the names the grandchildren actually use for them, which are often funnier. Avoid the script-font-and-hearts version.
Christmas Gifts for Grandparents

Christmas is where "I don't need anything" gets said most and ignored most. Keep it light and keep it family-shaped.
- The annual ornament. One new ornament each year with the grandchildren's names and the year. Within a few Christmases the tree tells the story of the family on its own.
- A photo calendar for the new year. The same calendar as above, timed for January. It is the most useful December gift on this list.
- Matching family pyjamas. For the Christmas morning photo. Include the grandparents' sizes without making them ask.
- A framed print of the last visit. The group photo from the summer, printed properly. Not a canvas unless they like canvas.
- A short run of custom cards with their names. Grandparents write more cards than anyone. A box with "From Margaret and David" printed inside saves them a job and gets used by February.
Our full guide to personalized Christmas gift ideas has more, and our Christmas ordering guide covers when to order so the ornament arrives before the tree goes up.
Gifts of Time, Made Tangible
Sometimes the right gift is a visit, and the trick is to give it in a form they can hold.
- A ticket, printed. A real card announcing the date you are coming, or the date they are flying to you. Vague promises do not count; a date does.
- A "grandparent day" voucher from each child. One afternoon, one activity, chosen by the grandchild. Baking, fishing, the museum. Handwritten.
- A standing video call, framed. For long-distance families, a card that reads "Sunday, 5pm, every week" and a simple stand for the tablet. The gift is the routine, not the stand.
What to Skip
- Anything with "World's Best Grandma" on it. They have three. The grandchildren's actual words beat a slogan every time.
- Gadgets they did not ask for. A smart speaker is a chore disguised as a present unless they have specifically wanted one.
- Consumables with no personal angle. Chocolates and bath sets are what you give when you have run out of time. Add a handwritten note from each grandchild and they become acceptable; without it, skip them.
- Large furniture or decor. Their house is full and their taste is their own. Small, personal and useful wins.
Timing and Budget
Most of these gifts are printed, engraved or stitched to order, so they are not same-day purchases. If you have a date to hit, our order-by calculator gives you the last safe day once you have the seller's production and shipping times, and our last-minute personalized gifts guide has the fallbacks for when you have missed it. On a tight budget, the framed drawing, the engraved garden marker and the custom cards all sit inside the range covered by our personalized gifts under $25 guide.
The grandparent who says they need nothing is telling you the truth. Give them the grandchildren, in a form they can keep, and watch them change their mind.
Good questions
What do you get grandparents who have everything?
Something made of the grandchildren rather than bought for the grandparents: a photo book they did not have to assemble, a framed drawing, a recording of a child reading, a calendar with every family birthday already filled in. They are not short of things. They are short of the kids.
What are good Christmas gifts for grandparents?
A new ornament each year with the grandchildren's names and the date, a photo calendar for the year ahead, matching family pyjamas for the morning, or a framed print of the whole family from the last visit. Order personalized items by late November so they arrive before the holidays.
Should gifts for grandma and grandpa be the same?
Give one shared gift for the house and one small personal gift each. The shared gift, a family-tree print or a names blanket, celebrates them as a pair. The personal ones show you know them as people, not just as a unit.
